The latest data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) show how often Furman students are taking advantage of engaged learning experiences, compared to students at nearly 1,700 bachelor’s-granting colleges and universities in the United States and Canada (NSSE schools), Carnegie institutions (those with a similar emphasis on teaching undergraduates) and Southeast private colleges.

45%

of first-year Furman students said their college experience was “excellent.”

This compares to 34% for both Southeast private and Carnegie class institutions, and 30% for NSSE schools.

93%

of first-year Furman students said they intended to return next year.

5 points higher than for both the Carnegie and NSSE groups, and 7 points higher than Southeast private schools.

80%

of Furman seniors had participated in an internship.

This surpasses Carnegie schools (66%), Southeast private schools (52%) and NSSE (48%).

45%

of Furman seniors had completed a study away experience or had one in progress.

This surpasses Carnegie schools (24%), Southeast private schools (12%) and NSSE (8%).

34

Points higher

At 56%, Furman seniors were more than twice as likely than seniors at NSSE schools to have completed research with faculty or to have research in progress, 29 points higher than Southeast private schools and 9 points above the Carnegie schools.
