Semester in Japan

Furman offers students a unique study away experience through our Japanese Exchange and Affiliate programs. We offer exchange and affiliate programs in both the fall and spring semesters, as well as an academic year exchange. Students take Japanese language courses, which vary dependent on their fluency. Additional courses are offered in both English and Japanese languages.


CIEE Sophia University Tokyo, Japan Affiliate Program

The prestigious Sophia University is CIEE’s partner school and your host for coursework in English on anthropology, art history, cultural studies, history, international business and economics, linguistics, literature, political science, and religion and philosophy. While taking your courses in the heart of fascinating, sprawling, and densely populated Tokyo, it’s easy to immerse yourself in the culture and language. Opportunities to volunteer in the community or no-credit internship further enriches the experience. All courses are complemented with CIEE co-curricular activities and excursions beyond the city to enhance classroom learning and provide intercultural understanding.

Students can study away at Sophia University in the spring semester or for a full academic year.

IES Abroad Nanzan University Nagoya, Japan

Tradition meets modernity in the thriving Japanese city of Nagoya. The fourth-largest city and the hub of Japanese manufacturing industries in Japan, Nagoya has plenty of festivals, traditional arts, and sports to enjoy. Countless cultural traditions began in Nagoya and have been passed down through generations—the city is referred to as Geidokoro, a center for art and culture.

Immerse yourself in Japanese culture through full-time enrollment at the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) at Nanzan University. As a distinguished private university, Nanzan University offers excellent learning opportunities. In addition to a required intensive Japanese language class, you will choose from a range of CJS English-taught course offerings in Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and enjoy hands-on instruction in Japanese arts such as ikebana, shodo, hanga, and sumie. Students with very advanced language skills are encouraged to enroll in seminars taught in Japanese with local students.

Kansai Gaidai University Exchange Program

Kansai Gaidai is recognized as one of the top international education institutions in the Japan. This university that was founded in 1945 currently enrolls about 15,000 undergraduate students.

Kansai Gaidai is located in the city of Hirakata, Japan, which is the second largest business metropolis next to Tokyo. Hirakata is also close to Kyoto and Nara, both of which are synonymous with “Japan’s rich tradition.” This Geographic advantage provides students with easy access to the centers of Osaka and Kyoto in little over half an hour by train.

Students can study away at Kansai Gaidai University in the fall or spring semester.

Seinan Gakuin University Exchange Program

Seinan Gakuin University, Furman’s exchange partner, was founded in 1916 and currently enrolls about 8,000 undergraduate students. Fukuoka, where Seinan Gakuin is located, is on the island of Kyushu and is only 335 miles from Seoul, Korea, and 540 miles from Shanghai, making it a good location to explore other Asian countries. Fukuoka as access to the beach, mountains and large commercial areas.

Boasting an excellent transport system, Fukuoka is a great location for international exchange students. Exchange students will find it easy to immerse themselves in this school and culture as there are many attractions in this international city.

Waseda University Exchange Program

Waseda is a private university which was founded in 1882 with the purpose of preparing Japanese leaders. Now, a school with more than 50,000 students, it takes pride in being one of the top universities in Japan, with most of the other international students hailing from China, Korea or Taiwan. The School of International Studies (SILS) at Waseda is designed to be a one-year liberal arts exchange program to educate future leaders of the world.

Based in Tokyo, Japan, students will experience the big city life; quite a change in pace from Furman.  Furman students participate in Waseda’s School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), which is based in the “Waseda Campus” of the University in the center of the city. Excluding language-specific classes, courses at SILS are taught in English. Students stay in one of the several dormatories specifically for exchange students which are within walking distance from the SILS campus. Students may engage with in continued cultural exchange through Waseda’s Intercultural Communication Center (ICC), which organises intercultural events for all students regardless of nationality or academic year.
