IES Abroad London: Theater Studies

William Shakespeare said it best when he wrote “All the world’s a stage”—where better to study theater than the home of Shakespeare and so many other brilliant playwrights and performers? Engage in Britain’s rich historical and contemporary theatrical tradition through theater and drama courses.

Students will analyze the artistic, financial, and professional structures that influence theater in Britain, with an emphasis on London. You will also examine key texts and performances within the relevant historical and cultural context and delve into theater criticism, reception theory, dramaturgy, and stage design.

Students can attend a course at one of IES’ partner universities: the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) or Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL). A course in partnership with RADA begins with intensive workshops with RADA instructors on five periods of English drama and culminates in an independent research project guided by IES Abroad faculty. Optionally, you can supplement your IES Abroad coursework with one of a wide variety of drama courses at QMUL.

Students can enhance their experience by adding a community-based learning experience in Education, Mental Health Outreach, NGO Administration, Public Health Administration, or Social Outreach. Alternatively students can participate in a credit-bearing internship. Internship placements include:

  • Arts & Museums
  • Business
  • Education
  • Media
  • Politics
  • Theater
