Women and Politics Series

The presidential race of 2008 included the first ever female presidential nominee for either party, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the first female vice-presidential nominee for the Republican party, Sarah Palin. Clearly, women are finding a voice and a place in the political system, which our Women and Politics series celebrates. On the other hand, in South Carolina, there are no women in the state Senate and less than 10% of the combined state legislative officers are women, the lowest female representation rate in the country. The need for more female leadership in politics, in South Carolina and beyond, is a critical issue around which the Women and Politics series creates a forum for discussion.

Speakers in the dynamic Women and Politics series have included then-Senator now Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell; member of the European Parliament and chair of the European Green Party Monica Frassoni; former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright; and the President of Liberia, Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
