Reflecting on my time during this year’s Furman Engaged I can say that I have found myself with a new and refreshed perspective on my studies and, on a larger scale, my passions. Out of all the sessions that I attended, the one that helped me to be reminded of this the most was the research poster session held in Timmons arena. As a freshman in college, it is almost daily that I am trying to think of a plan for the future, whether that is for college itself or even afterward in the professional world. I often find myself at an impasse with myself because I have found it so hard to decide what I want to study. I find my mind being pulled and attracted in so many directions that I don’t know what to do and what path to follow. The stress that comes with this is similar to being dropped in the middle of a forest with no destination in mind. Lost and with no idea of where to go, it can be paralyzing to think of the potential choices or paths. However, what attending this poster session helped me to recognize is that this feeling of fear and anxiety about the future should be rather turned into the joy of the possibilities. Walking around and listening to fellow students, many of whom I know, and seeing their extraordinary and fascinating research in various fields helped me see that there are so many opportunities offered here that I can truly do anything I can dream of. While I may still be in the middle of that same forest as before, I no longer feel lost. Instead, it's as if many separate paths have appeared ahead of me in many different directions, just waiting for me to follow one. And while it may not necessarily make it any easier to pick one specific path, I can rest easy knowing that they all lead somewhere amazing.
