Furman’s Brent Nelsen appeared in several segments of WYFF News 4’s coverage of the June 27 presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. In the 11 p.m. broadcast, Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said the debate did little, if anything, to motivate viewers to vote. In the back and forth between the candidates, he said the most fundamental questions were buried – who are we as a people and what is our role in the world. Nelsen said while our country is facing big problems, we have two weaker candidates whose leadership capabilities are in question. He wrapped his comments by saying the debate did not represent the best moment in American Democracy. See additional comments in WYFF’s 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. pre-debate coverage.
