Academic freedom in Turkey?
Academic freedom is not something Turkey is known for, and Furman political science professor Kadir Yildirim says that recent legislation on higher education makes sure it will stay that way for years to come. In an op-ed for Al Jazeera English, Yildirim writes that the proposed legislation will affect board selection in private universities, tenure and promotion reviews, and granting of equivalency to degrees obtained abroad. Dr. Yildirim, who joined the Furman faculty in 2011, is a native of Turkey whose research interests include political Islam, politics of the Middle East, and Turkish politics.
