CLP: Futurity, Technology, and Society: Chinese and American Attitudes toward Tech in an Age of Anxiety

March 26 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

In this CLP event, journalist and podcaster Kaiser Kuo will give a 45-minute lecture on how technology has been so central to the way the US and China have shifted perceptions of one another and impacted their interactions in the last few decades. Kaiser will draw on his experience making the new PBS NOVA documentary Inside China’s Tech Boom (premiered November 8, 2023), which tells a compelling inside story of China’s meteoric rise to the forefront of global innovation. He will tie the main insights of the film to the bigger question of the US-China technology rivalry. He will also comment on the importance of humanities in mutual understanding, as a way of moving away from the pathological tendency to frame everything in terms of national security. This CLP will provide attendees a valuable perspective on changing US-China relations in the larger context of global technological innovation. In a 15-minute Q&A session after the talk, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the speaker.
