Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland to Speak on Campus Wednesday at 8 p.m.
GREENVILLE, S.C.—Eibhlin Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland, will speak on the Furman University campus Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. in Shaw Hall of the Younts Conference Center.
Her lecture, “Moving the Celtic Tiger: Civic Leadership in 21st Century Dublin,” is sponsored by the J. Kelly Sisk Lectureship in Public Affairs. The public is invited to attend without charge.
Byrne, who was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin in June, will be on the Furman campus throughout that week as a Fellow-in-Residence with Richard W. Riley Institute. She will speak to several classes and also meet with Furman faculty and city leaders.
“The Lord Mayor is a world class city leader,” said Don Gordon, director of The Riley Institute at Furman. “She is a remarkable, engaging woman who will provide the audience with a look at how Dublin is continuing to move forward economically, educationally and in its cutting edge approach to technology.”
A member of the Fianna Fáil (Republican) party, Byrne is the sixth woman to hold the title of Lord Mayor of Dublin. She has held distinguished positions in advocacy throughout her career and, prior to becoming Lord Mayor, served as a senior manager with the Daughters of Charity Child & Family Services with responsibility for 10 family centres around Dublin.
