GREENVILLE, S.C.—What used to be the Pastor’s School at Furman University now has a new name and a new emphasis.

“Engaging Faith,” which will be held on the Furman campus July 21-25, is a program designed as much for interested laity and church members as ministers.  The weeklong conference offers lectures and seminars that promote and engage faith through discussion, group learning and action.

“Engaging Faith is unique among conferences of this type because of our ability to offer access to speakers of national and international acclaim,” said Furman chaplain Vaughn CroweTipton.  “Our attendees not only hear some of the leading voices in theology today, but also have the opportunity to meet with those leaders and interact with their peers around topics facing every person of faith.”

The program still features the usual collection of outstanding faculty.  This year’s speakers are Max Stackhouse, the Rimmer and Ruth de Vries Professor of Reformed Theology and Public Life at Princeton University; Gail O’Day, associate dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs and A.H. Shatford Professor of Preaching and New Testament at Emory University; and Pamela Couture, vice president for Academic Affairs and dean and professor of Practical Theology at the Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri.

The speakers will make a variety of presentations during the week, including ones on “Globalization and Faith” (Stackhouse), “Congolese Peacemaking: Conflict Resolution” (Couture) and “Friendship as the Theological Center of the Gospel of John” (O’Day).

The “Engaging Faith” conference is open to the public.  Cost for commuters is $125.  Cost for boarders, which includes registration, room and all meals, is $300 for adults.  All sessions will take place in the Charles E. Daniel Chapel.
