Student Sarah Martin Selected to Attend Summer Program of Bel Canto Institute

Sarah Martin

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Sarah Martin, a Furman University junior from Morristown, Tenn., has been selected to attend the Summer Program of the prestigious Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy.  The 2008 summer program runs June 29-July 27.

Martin, a mezzo-soprano and music major at Furman, will participate in performance classes, private coachings and voice lessons, Italian language classes and lectures.  The program also includes masterclasses with world-renowned Bel Canto singers, performance opportunities in Florence, and day trips to nearby Tuscan towns.

The Bel Canto Institute was founded in 1987 by Metropolitan Opera Prompter and Assistant Conductor Jane Bakken Klaviter to continue the tradition of Bel Canto, the dominant style of singing in 19th and 20th century Italian opera.  In partnership with the State University of New York, College at New Paltz, the Institute holds annual summer programs in Florence for both high school students and college and post-graduate students.

Martin is a student of Furman music professor Tamara Matthews.  She is involved with the Furman Singers, Phi Eta Sigma, and the Exploration of Vocational Ministry.  She also interns at the Frazee Dream Center in Greenville.  A 2005 graduate of Morristown East High School, she is the daughter of Carri and Bill Martin of Morristown (37814).
