GREENVILLE, S.C. — During its spring meeting Saturday, the Furman University Board of Trustees heard that seven new members will join the board beginning July 1.
The new trustees are Robert H. Buckman of Memphis, Tenn., C. Jordan Clark of Atlanta, Ga., W. Randy Eaddy of Winston-Salem, N.C., David G. Ellison of Greenville, R. Todd Ruppert of Owings Mills, Md., and Peace Sterling Sullivan of Miami, Fla. The board elected the Rev. Hardy S. Clemons of San Antonio, Tex., as a trustee emeritus. Buckman, Eaddy and Ellison have all served previous terms on the board.
The board also recognized the seven current emeriti trustees at a special function Friday night. Those trustees, who are awarded the emeritus title in recognition of their extraordinary devotion and length of service to the university, are the Rev. Lloyd E. Batson of Easley, Sarah Belk Gambrell of Charlotte, N.C., Thomas S. Hartness of Greenville, Max M. Heller of Greenville, Ralph S. Hendricks of Simpsonville, Elizabeth Peace Stall of Greenville and Mary Peace Sterling of Greenville.
The trustees also approved promotions and/or tenure for 16 faculty members, and granted emeritus status to four retiring professors.
Furman faculty members receiving tenure were John S. Armstrong (Communication Studies), Margaret P. Caterisano (Theatre Arts), Harry Kuoshu (Modern Languages and Literatures), George B. Lipscomb (Education), Suresh Muthukrishnan (Earth and Environmental Sciences), Savita Nair (History), Matthew W. Olson (Music), Julian A. Reed (Health and Exercise Science) and Paul L. Thomas (Education). All but Olson were also promoted to the rank of associate professor, as was Christopher Hutton (Music).
Those promoted to the rank of professor were Michael L. Bressler (Political Science), Timothy G. Fehler (History), C. Sofia Kearns (Modern Languages and Literatures), Mark F. Kilstofte (Music), David W. Morgan (Modern Languages and Literatures) and Jeffrey T. Petty (Chemistry).
Emeritus status was granted to professors Charles A. Arrington (Chemistry), David B. Parsell (Modern Languages and Literatures), Richard A. Stanford (Economics) and Norman E. Whisnant (Modern Languages and Literatures).
All promotions, tenure and emeritus status become effective Aug. 1.
The board also recognized five trustees whose terms will expire June 30. Those leaving the board are H. Neel Hipp of Greenville, William B. Howes of Flat Rock, N.C., Stanford J. Jennings of Alpharetta, Ga., Carl F. Kohrt of Columbus, Ohio, and Emilyn C. Sanders of Greenville.
