GREENVILLE, S.C.—Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Chris Hedges will speak on “The Corporate State and the Subversion of Democracy” Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in Furman University’s Younts Conference Center.
Hedges’ address, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the A.S. Reid Lectureship. The talk is part of a Furman faculty-sponsored panel series titled “Assessing the Bush Presidency.” The panel discussions, which will take place May 15 and 19-21, will feature such topics as “Health Care,” “Media and Information” and “Wartime Executive Authority and Due Process: Historical Precedents.”
Hedges is the author of several books, including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and I Don’t Believe in Atheists. He spent nearly seven years as Middle East bureau chief for the New York Times, covered the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, and was part of the New York Times team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of global terrorism. He is currently a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City and a Lecturer in the Council of the Humanities and the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow at Princeton University.
