GREENVILLE, S.C.—Peter Beattie, former Premier of Queensland, Australia who now serves as Queensland’s Trade Commissioner to the Americas, will give a public address at Furman University Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Younts Conference Center.
Beattie’s address, “The Making of the Australian Tiger—Queensland’s Rise to the Top,” is sponsored by the Riley Institute at Furman in cooperation with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce. The event is open to the public without charge.
Beattie served as Queensland’s Premier from 1998–2007. He helped turn Queensland into Australia’s “Smart State” through a newly focused education system, workforce development and the creation of long-term jobs in industries such as biotechnology and information technology. He currently serves as Queensland’s Trade Commissioner to the Americas.
After joining the Australian Labor Party in 1974, Beattie played a major role in reforming the party’s Queensland branch before being elected State Secretary in 1981. In 1989, he was elected to Parliament as the Member for Brisbane Central and, in July 1995, he served as Health Minister before becoming Opposition Leader in 1996. He is the author of two books — The Year of the Dangerous Ones (1994) and the autobiographical In the Arena (1990).
The Riley Institute at Furman, named for Furman graduate Richard W. Riley, offers a broad array of programs designed to engage students and citizens across South Carolina in the various arenas of politics, public policy, and public leadership.
