GREENVILLE, S.C.—Furman University is ranked among the nation’s best private college values in the most recent issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.
Furman was ranked No. 24 in the category of “Best Values in Private Liberal Arts Colleges.” Using the measurements of “strong academics, attractive prices and generous financial aid,” the April 2008 issue of Kiplinger’s ranked the top 50 private universities and top 50 liberal arts schools in separate categories.
The 100 schools making the two lists were selected from more than 1,000 private institutions. In compiling the rankings, the magazine considered quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. The rankings were based on admission rate, SAT/ACT scores, student/faculty ratio, graduation rate, total cost and cost after need-based aid.
Seventy-eight percent of Furman students receive some type of financial aid. The university awarded a total of $31 million in financial aid during the 2007-08 school year.
Wofford College (No. 45 in the Liberal Arts category) was the only other South Carolina school to be selected for the rankings.
