Furman Sophomore Jennifer Myers Named Goldwater Scholar for 2008-09 School Year

 

Jennifer Myers is a sophomore chemistry major from Orangeburg.
GREENVILLE, S.C.—Jennifer Myers, a Furman University sophomore from Orangeburg, has been awarded the 2008-09 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of the nation’s most prestigious academic scholarships.

      Chris Turlington, a sophomore chemistry major from Mills River, N.C., was also honored by being named to the Goldwater Scholars’ honorable mention list.

      Myers, a chemistry major, is among 321 undergraduate sophomores and juniors from around the nation to be selected for the honor. The Goldwater scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

      The scholarships are awarded to students who intend to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.  It is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

      The program, established in 1986, honors the late Sen. Barry M. Goldwater.  In its history, the Foundation has awarded 5,523 scholarships worth approximately $54 million.

      Myers, a dean’s list student at Furman, is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, the Furman Gospel Ensemble, Ladies of Distinction Mentoring Program, and the L.E.G.A.C.I.E.S. Peer Mentoring Program.  She has received the CRS Press Freshman Chemistry Award and the Office of Multicultural Affairs Drum Major Award.

      She is a 2006 graduate of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, where she was valedictorian.  She is the daughter of Joyce and Dr. James Myers of Orangeburg.
