University Presents Awards, Honorary Degree During Founders Convocation Activities

GREENVILLE, S.C.— Chandra Dillard, director of community relations at Furman and a member of Greenville City Council, served as speaker when Furman held its Founders Convocation Wednesday, April 2 at 10 a.m. in McAlister Auditorium.

      As part of the convocation activities, an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree will was awarded posthumously to William King “B.K.” Bryan, Sr., a former Furman trustee who died in January 2007.  The award was presented to his daughters, Ann P. Bryan, Katherine B. Anderson and Betsy Bryan Jones.

      William H. Bellinger, a 1972 Furman graduate and chair of the religion department at Baylor University, received the Richard Furman Baptist Heritage Award.  The Chiles-Harrill Award, which goes to a member of the faculty or staff who has made substantial contributions to the lives of Furman students, was presented to Theresa Cureton, a department assistant in the Student Services office who has worked at Furman since 1992.

      Dillard, a graduate of Winthrop University, came to Furman from Rockwell Automation, where she spent 16 years as a sales and service professional.  Elected to Greenville City Council in 1999, she represents District 3 and chairs the City's Quality of Life/Environment Committee.  She just announced that she is running for the South Carolina House of Representatives in District 23.

      Dillard currently serves on the boards of the Phillis Wheatley Association, the Alliance for Quality Education, Generation Group Home and the University Center Board of Visitors. She is a Certified Lay Leader at John Wesley United Methodist Church, and was selected by Greenville Magazine as being one of Greenville's “Best & Brightest.”
