GREENVILLE, S.C.—President George W. Bush will serve as a commencement speaker when Furman University holds its graduation exercises Saturday, May 31, but he won’t be the only person speaking to the graduates and their families. Sharing the stage, as well as the national spotlight, with President Bush will be student speaker Meredith Neville, a graduating senior from Charleston, S.C.
Furman will award approximately 650 degrees at commencement, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Paladin Stadium. Because priority for seating has been given to the graduates, their families and members of the Furman community, commencement is closed to the public. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Timmons Arena
President Bush is the first sitting president to visit the campus in its 182-year history.
Neville, a communication studies major, was chosen to speak at commencement by the John H. Crabtree Student Commencement Speaker Selection Committee. During her four years at Furman, she has served as president of the communication honors society, acted in six major productions of the Furman Theatre and was the student editorial assistant for the Furman Humanities Review. She received the Endel Medal for Excellence in Communication Studies.
Neville just returned from attending master classes at The Promise of Reason Conference in Eugene, Ore., where she discussed her paper “Violence as Rhetoric: A Study of the Weather Underground.” After graduation, she will attend the University of Kansas, where she will pursue her doctorate in communication studies with an emphasis in rhetoric.
