Faculty Positions ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS The Department of Economics at Furman University seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level beginning in August 2009. Furman employs faculty members who are effective teachers and active in research and the life of the university. We are especially interested in hiring an instructor who can teach a variety of economics courses from among public finance, industrial organization, environmental economics, health economics, and feminist economics, in addition to principles and first-year seminars. Asian Studies/Modern Languages The Departments of Asian Studies and Modern Languages invite applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Program Director of the Furman-Suzhou Intensive Summer Chinese Language Institute. Candidates must 1) hold a Ph.D. in Chinese language pedagogy, linguistics or literature; 2) be an experienced and devoted language teacher; 3) have native or near-native fluency in Mandarin and English. Use of instructional technology and strong organizational skills will be an advantage. This new hire will be charged with directing the Furman-Suzhou summer language program located in Suzhou, PRC and teaching two to three Chinese courses at Furman during the academic year. Furman University Center for Sustainability Post-Doctoral ACS Environmental Studies Fellow (Two Year Appointment) Furman University seeks candidates for a two-year, full-time Post-Doctoral Fellowship in our interdisciplinary Center for Sustainability. This Fellowship is supported by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) with grant funds received from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The appointment will be for the academic years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. The starting date is August 2009. The successful candidate will have a research agenda that supports Furman?s developing primary thematic areas for our Center for Sustainability: nature-society dynamics, ecological design and planning, and place-based documentation of environmental change and human response. The candidate will teach up to three courses per year and be mentored by senior environmental studies faculty. We desire a candidate who applies sustainability theory and practice to local and regional contexts, engages students in community-level research, and promotes interdisciplinary examinations using the tools of qualitative and/or quantitative inquiry and research (mixed methods is a plus). A Ph.D. (earned within the last five years) is required, most preferably in the social sciences (specific interest is geography or planning), but candidates with expertise in other fields may be considered. AA/EOE COMMUNICATION Furman University seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mass Communication. Ph.D. or equivalent preferred, ABD considered. To teach Introduction to Mass Media, media practice courses (Digital Communication and perhaps Broadcast Communication), and to develop and teach upper-division courses in area of scholarly expertise. Preferred areas include: Media & Political Economy, Communication Policy, Media History, Media Convergence, Media Ecology (especially media environments), New Media, and/or Critical Studies of Global Media. The department is especially interested in candidates who can forge productive relationships with our colleagues in related departments. The appointment is effective August 1, 2009. Communication Studies is a dynamic and growing department, one at the center of Furman's engaged learning approach to liberal education.
