PRESIDENT, FURMAN UNIVERSITY

Furman University, a highly selective, private, residential coeducational liberal arts college is seeking its eleventh president.

Located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on a beautiful 750-acre campus, five miles north of Greenville, South Carolina, Furman provides a distinctive undergraduate education encompassing the humanities, fine arts (including a conservatory-quality music performance major), social sciences, mathematics and the natural sciences, and selected professional disciplines. Furman is recognized nationally for academic excellence and emphasizes engaged learning, a problem-solving, project-oriented and research-based educational philosophy. Furman was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter in 1973.

Furman also offers graduate programs in education and chemistry and enjoys an excellent relationship with the Greenville community through student volunteerism, internships, continuing education and access to campus events.  At the state level, the Riley Institute offers programs in education, government and leadership. Furman's 2600 undergraduates and 417 graduate students come from 48 states and 47 foreign countries. Average SAT scores are 1278. Ninety-four percent of freshmen return for their sophomore year. Forty percent of Furman graduates immediately enter graduate or professional schools. Another thirty percent ultimately do so.

The 230-member faculty are active teachers, scholars, researchers and mentors; 96 percent hold a terminal degree. The Furman staff of 570, like the faculty, has little turnover and great loyalty to the institution. Recently, Furman was named by The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the top nine small liberal arts colleges in the country in terms of staff satisfaction. A member of NCAA Division I and the Southern Conference, Furman fields eight men's varsity teams and nine women's teams, several of which are nationally ranked. The university also offers 28 intramural or club sports involving more than 80 percent of the student body.

Founded by Baptists in 1826 and valuing its heritage, Furman has since 1992 been independent and governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. On June 30, 2008, the Furman endowment stood at $560 million. Its 2008 operating budget was $150.4 million. Furman is in the midst of a capital campaign, Because Furman Matters, which as of June 30, 2009 had raised $278 million toward its $400 million goal. Furman benefits enormously from being one of four higher education beneficiaries of The Duke Endowment and from its $115 million bequest from alumnus John D. Hollingsworth, which is managed by the Hollingsworth Fund and included in Furman's endowment value. Like most colleges and universities facing the economic downturn and in light of many worthy competing budgetary claims, Furman will need to decide on how best to allocate those resources as well as which of its strategic goals should take priority in the final phases of the campaign. Furman recognizes that residence halls require renovation, departmental budgets are strained and endowment for financial aid, faculty positions and faculty development need to be increased.

Furman's next president will have earned the terminal degree in his/her field; understand strategic planning, budgets and the importance of a mission-centered approach to allocating resources; be an effective speaker and writer, able to tell the Furman story to both internal and external audiences; have the capacity to be an extremely successful fundraiser; understand admissions and financial aid; share the University's commitment to diversifying the student body, the faculty and the staff; be committed to faculty and staff development and celebrate the accomplishments of both. She/he preferably will have had experience at a private liberal arts college (as a student, a faculty member, an administrator and/or a trustee). New USERRA Notification: (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Right Act)The Veterans Benefits Improvment Act of 2004, Public Law 108-454, was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 10 of last year.  The Act is designed to improve and enhance education, housing, employment and medical and other benefits for veterans.  One item of significance for the employer community, however is the Act's provision requiring that employees be provided with notice of their rights, beneftis, and obligations under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA).   The new law also increases the maximum period that employee who are absent by reason of service in the uniformed services have the right ot continue to participate in the employer's health care plan.  The maximum period for continuation coverage is now 24 months (up from 18 months).  This provision became effective with the passage of the law.  Even if you don't elect to continue coverage during your military service, you have the right to be reinstated in your employer's health plan when you are reemployed, generally without any waiting periods or exclusions (e.g., pre-existing condition exclusions) except for service-connected illnesses or injuries.
