Diana Ivankovich: Breast Cancer Researcher and Survivor
Dr. Diana Ivankovic, a Croatian-born breast cancer researcher at Anderson University in Anderson, SC, will be presenting her development of a new diagnostic test. She and four of her students discovered a means to identify the BRCA-1 breast cancer gene. Eighty percent of Breast cancer victims with the gene have recurrent cancer. The newly developed test will significantly decrease the cost of diagnosis, which currently is approximately $3,000 and is not typically covered by health insurance companies. Further, it will make diagnosis more globally affordable for women who are affected by this disease and who are unable to seek or afford medical attention. Dr. Ivankovic will also present her very personal experience with Breast Cancer. Her mother died of breast cancer. In addition, she has had her own battle with breast cancer. She will talk candidly about how she reconciled her life's work with the battle for her life by making the decision of whether or not to use the diagnostic test she developed to predict if her own cancer will return.
CREDENTIALS: Associate Professor of Biology at Anderson University. Dr.
Ivankovic has the follwoing degrees: I.B., United World College of the
Adriatic; B.S.,Lander University; M.S., Ph.D., Clemson University. She is
also a Breast Cancer Survivor.
